Frequently asked questions and comments regarding swimming lessons
What do I bring?
Swimsuit and a towel. You may wish to bring clothes to change after the lesson.
Do I need to bring goggles?
Goggles are not necessary especially for younger children, but they may be used in some classes.
Can I make up lessons?
Please plan your schedule carefully for swim lessons because they will not be rescheduled unless the Site Director cancels them.
Will my child be able to swim after taking lessons?
Each child is different. If he/she has any fear of water or is reluctant, that may be the first issue to overcome before skills may be taught. Swimming skills are progressive and depend greatly upon a child’s motor skills. Repetition and practice are necessary to reinforce the skills. Therefore, it is important that children are involved in swimming lessons until several different strokes are passable.
We live by a pond/pool and I want my child to be safe if he/she falls in, so I want to enroll him in swimming lessons so he/she is prepared.
There is no such thing as “drown proofing” a child. Adult supervision is a must around all bodies of water! However, the YMCA emphasizes water safety topics in swimming class to help educate children and adults.
How many children are in a swimming class?
For preschool and children beginning to swim, we strive to have one instructor to 5 students. For older children who are working on higher levels, we strive for one instructor to 6 students.
Can I watch my child during swimming lessons or can I leave?
We would be glad for you to watch your child in swimming lessons. On the last day of class we allow the parents to come and watch their child inside the pool area. During regular class we ask that the parents sit outside the pool area to allow the child their full learning experience without distraction.
Do I get in the pool with my child?
Classes for 3 and older do not require the parent to be in the pool.
I want my child in swim lessons in the beginning of the summer so he/she can swim for the rest of the summer?
Even though swimming lessons are great at the beginning of the summer, swimming lessons are also important throughout the summer. A child who has had an opportunity to play in the water during the summer will be more comfortable working on specific techniques.
